Pros and Cons of Traditional Coaxial Cables

Coaxial Cable Introduction
The need for passing multiple circuits along a single transmission line emerged in 1930s, as the boom of radio transmission requires more on signal compatibility, and bare wire has been long deem vulnerable to external interference. To address this problem, scientists at Bell Laboratories developed a new type of cable, which is known today as the coaxial cable.

The coaxial cable a shielded cable consisting of an inner wire surrounded by non-conductive material called a dielectric. This nonconductive material was then surrounded by another outer conductor for insulation. Overtime the design has seen some minor adjustment, but the overall design remains today.
Coaxial Cable: Pros
As a revolutionary product at the time, the coaxial cable has many advantages: it is flexible enough to be used as a jumper cable; it is easy to install and operate, with satisfactory performance; it has low signal loss, high-power capacity, and long operational life. Most of all, it is quite inexpensive to use, and this makes it popular in no time within the industry.
Coaxial Cable: Cons
Nothing is perfect. After years of industrial application, people have realized limits of the coaxial cables: it has significant signal loss for extended length, and sometime it is too thick to operate. In addition, the cable is performance is susceptible to too many factors, like weather, temperature, or load.
Fiber Cable: The Ongoing Trend
Given the disadvantages of the coaxial cable, the emerging fiber cable has been gradually taking place of the fiber cable. In modern 3G/4G base station, the fiber cable connects base station equipment to the RRU with zero loss at a significant range, and connects the base station to upper network at higher speed and reliability. As the 5G continues to develop, the fiber cable will no doubt become more and more popular.
